Venice was founded by local people who moved to islands in the lagoon for protection against invasions by barbarians in 5th century.

The city is actually built on a number of islands, and therefore there's a lot of water. A lot of water was pumped out of artesian wells which resulted in settling of the ground that Venice is built on. But now, the sinking of Venice become a serious problem that will destory the building heritage.
Venice is a non car zone. Venice City can visit almost by the ferries, boats, cycling, on foot and gondola(Venice traditional boat)

The Bridge of Sighs (Italian: Ponte dei Sospiri)
The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone and has windows with stone bars.Before, it's use for connects the old prisons to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace.The Bridge of Sighs in Venice received its name in the 17th century, because the prisoner who passed through it's two passages inside on their way to the prison cells on the others side would more than likely see the beautiful sight of the lagoon and the island of S.Giorgio and freedom for the last time.
Saint Mark's Basilica (Italian: Basilica di San Marco a Venezia)
Saint Mark's Basilica is the cathedral church of Venice, is the most famous of the city's churches. Its status as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, from the 11th century on the building was known by the nickname Chiesa d'Oro (Church of gold).
Festa del Redentore(Redeemer's Ceremony) in Venice It is a solemn procession set up in 1576 when a terrible plague ended and it was then decided to build the Church of the Health. This event is celebrated at about the end of July with the building of two bridges of boats connecting the Basilica of St.Mark, Venice to the Church of the Health and the latter to the Church of the Giudecca in Venice. In the evening dinner is served on board the lighted ships, awaiting the traditional fireworks.

The Rialto Bridge (Italian: Ponte di Rialto)
The Rialto Bridge is one of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice built in 1181 . It is the oldest bridge across the canal, and the most famous in the city.The development and importance of the Rialto market on the eastern bank increased traffic on the floating bridge. So it was replaced in 1255 by a wooden bridge.
Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo
Plazzo Contarini del Bovolo is a small palace in Venice, best known for the external spiral staircase.The palace dates from the 15th century, and is in need of restoration. The staircase leads to an arcade, providing a charming panoramic view over some of the roof-tops of the city. The palace is located in a less-traveled side-street near the Campo Manin, near the Rialto.
